Company summary

KT is Korea's largest integrated fixed-line and wireless communications service provider. For the last 25 years, the company has been the country's leader in the development of the information and communications business. KT serves more than 20 million customers in Korea, China and Vietnam.

Quote

"Using HP OpenCall to support our converged networks, KT cut operational costs by 50 percent and multiplied revenue potential through unlimited IN and IP service capacity."

— Dae-Woo Choi, IN Service District Manager

Industry

Telecommunications

Challenge

To advance its strong position in the market, KT sought to provide its customers with innovative Internet Protocol (IP) based services—such as Ring Back Tones, IP Centrex and Multimedia Caller Identification—without incurring tremendous costs supporting a separate IP broadband network.

Solution

A converged network would 1) reduce complexity, 2) optimize KT's existing voice network investment and 3) enable KT to take advantage of evolving technologies for data and multimedia services.

KT implemented HP OpenCall Service Controller to accelerate the development, testing and deployment of wireline, wireless and next-generation services. Utilizing SS7 and IP signaling, the HP OpenCall solution provided KT with a highly scalable platform to ensure quality of service in the converged network.

Because the IN service operation is tightly coupled with HP OpenCall Service Controller, the current staff of operational experts needed little training on the HP OpenCall IP platform. In fact, the existing staff now supports both Intelligent Network (IN) and IP services, significantly reducing total cost of ownership.

KT is now positioned to deliver the full range of services available today and the next-generation IP services of tomorrow. In 2007, KT will upgrade IN services to provide both voice and video capability. In addition, the company will use the HP OpenCall solution to migrate public switched telephone network (PSTN) services to the IP network, expanding capacity accordingly.

Results

  • Leveraged existing IT knowledge base across IN and IP networks
  • Multiplied revenue potential through new IP services and unlimited service capacity
  • Cut operational costs by 50% through reduced complexity and simplified management
  • Improved customer satisfaction through highly reliable services
  • Delivers a new service in just 4 weeks

Business outcome

KT promoted bottom line savings and top line growth, reducing operational costs by 50 percent while optimizing revenue potential with new IP services.
