HP OpenCall software helps WiderThan.com and Globe Telecom sign on 100,000 ringback tone subscribers in one week

HP has announced that WiderThan.com, South Korea's largest solution, service and content provider, has deployed a complete, fully integrated solution based on HP OpenCall software to offer high-quality ringback tone service to mobile customers in The Philippines. The service is delivered through Globe Telecom, the country's leading operator. In just one week after launch, the WiderThan.com-enabled service generated more than 100,000 Ringback Tone customers for Globe Telecom.

Ringback tone is a personalized service that enables mobile phone subscribers to customize the ringback tone that callers hear when they dial the subscriber's number or send a short message (SMS). Instead of a standard ringback tone, the incoming caller hears music, movie lines or even a personal greeting. Demand for this service is surging around the world, particularly in Asia. According to research firm, Datamonitor, $4 billion in revenue will be generated from Ringback tones by 2008. The Philippines is a particularly strong market for personalized ringback tones because it generates more SMS traffic than all the countries of Europe combined.

To deploy the service, WiderThan.com faced two key challenges: to provide consistent and crystal clear audio quality; and to support the service with a scalable, flexible information technology (IT) infrastructure that can handle massive volumes of download activity.

WiderThan.com deployed the HP OpenCall Media Platform (HP OCMP), a highly scalable, carrier-grade voice service platform that enables the rapid development and secure deployment of next-generation messaging, portals and voice-enabled interactive services. It features one of the highest density, voice processing and critical call control function and leverages the advantages of the world-leading HP SS7 signaling technology.

"It was very clear from day one that we needed an infrastructure that is scalable, reliable and proven: that is why we turned to HP," said Leslie Song, manager, Global Business Division, WideThan.com Asia Pacific. "HP OCMP has the multiple functions needed to handle voice and sound services. The simplicity, agility and value proposition delivered by HP OCMP has enabled a faster and smoother introduction for our ringback tone services."

HP OCMP reduces the risk of capacity loss and also eliminates a single point of failure for any element of the system. It also provides proven capabilities for high-availability deployments, such as Ringback Tones. In addition, HP OCMP uses VoiceXML technology, a standards-based mark-up language for creating and deploying telephony-based voice user interaction applications. This enables WiderThan.com to develop, test and quickly and cost-effectively deploy new applications, beyond ringback tones.

"HP OpenCall software is a core building block in HP's strategy to help network and service providers deliver and manage innovative mobile services that will drive growth and revenue," said Hoong Sun Kwok, business development director, Software Global Business Unit, HP. "Based on industry-standard technology, HP's telecom solutions give our customers the flexibility to synchronize network resources with business need to capitalize on change in the mobile environment."

HP OpenCall is a suite of comprehensive, carrier-grade platforms for developing and deploying next-generation voice, data and converged services. HP OpenCall platforms connect to any network and enable people to communicate, access information and conduct transactions in an always-on infrastructure. HP has deployed OpenCall software in 40 of the world's top 50 service provider networks, and OpenCall is the market leader in many industry categories, including SS7, mobility management and location services.
