Course description

This course provides the student with an understanding of the requirements for the GSM Home Location Register (HLR) and Authentication Center (AC) network functional entities. Students are introduced to the integrated solutions: Intelligent Network Server, GSM Home Location Register, and GSM Authentication Center.

Course benefit

The roles of the HLR and the AC in Global System for Mobiles (GSM) and General Packet Radio System (GPRS) networks are detailed. Students gain an understanding of automatic roaming; GSM and GPRS message flow, mobile telephone feature management, short message service, and fraud prevention techniques.

Target audience

The course is designed for network operations personnel, selected switch technicians, system administrators, software developers and installers, support analysts, and customer care personnel.

Learning objectives

Upon successful completion of this training, participants should be able to:

  • Recall the evolution of mobile telephone communications and the emergence of wireless intelligent networks
  • List the major components of the HLR and AuC software
  • Understand the communications protocols used by GSM and GPRS networks
  • Configure the system-level features of the GSM HLR
  • Configure the circuit-based features of the GSM HLR
  • Configure the packet-based features of the GSM HLR
  • Describe the operation of the subscriber-managed features
  • Configure the Short Message Services of the GSM HLR
  • Understand GSM mobile telephone authentication and the operation of the AC network element

At the beginning of the course, each participant will receive a copy of all overhead slides. Lectures are interspersed with hands-on exercises, with about 1/3 of the course dedicated to practical sessions. These practical sessions include:

Trainers profile

Training will be led by a senior HP consultant with a background in telecommunications, networks and the HP OpenCall NonStop INS platform, and with experience in maintaining and supporting customer sites.

Audience size

Typically, 3-12 participants are present in each class: A minimum of 3 students will be required, and class size is limited to a maximum of 12.

Course location

This course can be delivered both at a Hewlett-Packard site (with HP-supplied facilities and equipment) or on demand at the customer's premises (in which case the customer is responsible for training room setup, including PC video projector, white board, functioning NonStop lab system, or firewall access to an external server).
